About the Segera Retreat

At a Glance
Located in the heart of Laikipia Plateau, just north of the Equator in Kenya, Segera is a unique destination with both arid and savannah landscapes.

Just eight luxury villas in a private game reserve of 50,000 acres in the foothills of Mt Kenya makes Segera very private and exclusive.

See all of the Big Five in addition to rarer species such as Wild Dog, Reticulated Giraffe and Grevy’s Zebra. The reserve enjoys stunning landscapes, including views of Mount Kenya right from the lodge.

Out of Africa views

Who could forget the scenery from the film; with aerial footage of a flock of flamingo roused over a picturesque great lake? The Rift Valley region was the location for the scene. The original 1929 fixed-wing yellow Gipsy Moth plane used in the movie was purchased at an auction by Segera and returned home to Kenya. This refitted aircraft still flies over the stunning scenery of Mount Kenya and the nearby lakes, piloted by owner Jochen Zeitz.

4C Conservation

Zeitz acquired Segera in 2005 to help secure this special wilderness against poaching and land misuse. The Zeitz foundation undertook eco-management under their 4C concept of Community, Commerce, Conservation and Culture, turning a new leaf in restoring the beauty of the region and engaging indigenous community support in preserving its cultural legacy. A lodge staff of 200 includes Maasai, Samburu, Pokot & Kikuyu tribes. Cultural community visits offer insight on rural lifestyle.

Organic Cooking

Sourced from Segera’s own herb & vegetable gardens, the freshest ingredients make up the menus at Segera Retreat. Seasonal fruit and agricultural produce is garnered from the local sustainable farming, often from growers within the Segera Community.

Fresh trout from the local streams, community beekeeping and free-range beef from the Boran cattle, all part of the 4C philosophy renders a delicious result, farm to table.
