A flap-neck chameleon
takes each stride with caution to avoid attracting to much attention as it moves across an open area of ground. This gives them their Afrikaans name 'Trapsuutjies' (tread softly). In addition, they usually employ a forward/backward swaying motion as they move. This is probably to disguise their deliberate forward motion, making them look like a leaf randomly swaying in the wind.
