Guided Safaris® Bisate Golden Monkey Trek Safari LuxurySafariLodges.com
GOLDEN MONKEY TREKKING
Besides gorillas, the park’s bamboo forests are home to the playful and endangered golden monkeys. This trek offers a unique glimpse into the lives of one of Africa’s lesser-known primates.
The golden monkey (Cercopithecus mitis kandti) is a unique subspecies of the widely distributed Sykes monkey, often called the "Blue Monkey." These charismatic primates are found exclusively in the high-altitude forests of Volcanoes National Park. Known for their playful and curious nature, golden monkeys can often be seen jumping between bamboo branches or romping on the forest floor. Visitors can track one of two distinct troops: one residing on the slopes of Mount Karisimbi, while the other inhabits the bamboo forest around Mount Sabyinyo.
Golden monkeys are unmistakable with their vibrant yellow-gold patches scattered across their bodies. Classified as "Old World monkeys," they stand out for their distinctive noses. While most monkeys have sideways-facing nostrils, golden monkeys have upward-facing ones—a unique feature among primates. Though often assumed to live openly in trees, golden monkeys skillfully weave bamboo to create intricate nests and beds for resting.
Groups range from 30 to 80 individuals, and you can spend up to an hour observing these energetic primates as they leap through the trees. Golden monkey trekking is limited to one morning session each day. Visitors must arrive promptly at 7:00 AM at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi for a brief orientation before setting out on their trek. A trek permit is required, and can be inclusive of your Guided Safaris® journey by request.

Volcanoes National Park is more than just a destination for Gorilla Trekking; it’s a journey into Rwanda’s breathtaking landscapes, rich heritage, and unique biodiversity. Here’s an overview of the experiences awaiting visitors in this extraordinary region:
Volcano Hiking: Peaks of Karisimbi, Bisoke, and Muhabura
For adventurous spirits, Volcanoes National Park offers challenging treks to three prominent volcanic peaks:
